“[Y]ou are the bearer of a body more fragile than any other in this country”— Ta-Nehisi Coates

Michael Brown, Renisha McBride, Eric Garner, Freddie. Gray, LaQuan McDonald…Over the past year, America has seen violence inflicted on black bodies. From children attacked at a pool party, to a young girl thrown from a classroom desk by a school safety officer. The incidents and many others lead us to ask the hard question, “How does one live free in a Black body?” This is the question at the center of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book Between the World and Me. Start your new year off with a reading group as we wrestle with the complexities of our contemporary life through a theological lens. Attendees are encouraged to read the book before the sessions begin. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly”—John 10:10
