ABYSSINIAN BAPTIST CHURCH LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Abyssinian Baptist Church is a proud, religious organization founded in 1808 in the City of New York. Our ancestors founded this Church to worship God freely and to enjoy the freedoms denied to them elsewhere. They equated education with freedom. And after Emancipation, their donations and missionary work helped to create and maintain schools and colleges to educate our people in the South. They engaged in this important work when segregationists blocked the doorways to many educational institutions.

The rising cost of higher education is one of the biggest foes facing us today, yet our mission remains the same as our ancestors. The good news is that the God we serve has given us the power to overcome this obstacle. Our faith in God has given us the power to open the doors to opportunity by creating educational scholarships to help Church members realize their potential. Today, the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York is announcing its legacy program. Members and friends of the Abyssinian Baptist Church may create scholarships or endowments to be given in honor of loved ones or self.

CREATING AN ABYSSINIAN BAPTIST CHURCH  POSTSECONDARY SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF A LOVED ONE

Typically, Abyssinian Baptist Church Postsecondary Scholarships range between $500 and $2,500 a year. Members and friends will decide how large their scholarship will be and whether they will fund it for one year, two years, or for four years. Members and friends should make a donation to the Abyssinian Baptist Church covering the full amount of their scholarship by April 30 of the year it will be awarded. For example, a donation of $2,000 would create a $500 scholarship that would be awarded for four (4) years.

The Abyssinian Baptist Church has designated the Abyssinian Baptist Church Scholarship Ministry as the Church’s agency for screening, reviewing, and evaluating scholarship applications.

FUNDS ADMINISTRATION

The Abyssinian Baptist Church’s Stewardship Office will administer scholarship funds donated to the Church and will maintain those funds in a separate account. Donations for Abyssinian Baptist Church Postsecondary Scholarships are tax-deductible, charitable donations.
