Today at Abyssinian

209th Church Anniversary

The Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York was founded in 1808 by a group of free African-Americans living in New York City and Ethiopian merchants who were unwilling to tolerate racial discrimination in the house of God. They organized their own church and called themselves The Abyssinian Baptist Church, inspired by the ancient name for Ethiopia, Abyssinia.
